This is my personal review of the latest game, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban from EA Games, and doesn't necessarily mean you'll have the same opinion or that everyone else that works for the site will either. That being said, I would advise anyone interested in purchasing the game to change their mind and save their money.

(...) Seeing as the last two PC versions of the game had taken several days to complete and had been quite challenging, this one was expected to be the same. I could not have been more incorrect.

The last game from beginning to a mostly-cutscene rescue of Sirius Black (no, you don't get to fly Buckbeak to the tower, or ever outside of a learning experience), takes almost two and a half hours. The entire game is comprised of basically 4 locations: Hogwarts castle and its grounds, and the three areas where you learn three new spells. That's it. No more. No Hogsmeade. No Forbidden Forest. No Boggarts. No Professor Trelawney.

Even thinking about the game makes me reconsider the word "disappointing" as it doesn't seem severe enough.

Please do not trust the box which says the game is more challenging and that you are allowed to play as Harry, Hermione or Ron. That is partially true, you do play as different characters... just you're never given an opportunity to decide which character you're playing as. Sound fun? No, probably not.

Here's hoping EA chooses a different design team for Goblet of Fire or we may well lose all three tasks in the Triwizard Challenge or that insignificant scene at the end where Lord Voldemort returns.

Before you go, if you do purchase the game, there will be a surprise in it. You'll think you get to play Quidditch for a bit when there's a cut scene introducing it, but I too was fooled. It's just a cutscene about the Dementors and then you're back to normal. This game was both a waste of time and money - even on EA's part.

Based on the game, it sucks

Harry Potter chain of games on the PS2 hasn't been great so far these last three years. Harry Potter and the Philosiphers stone on the PS2 wasn't a great debut, the second one sounded good but didn't have much great gameplay, the lastest installment, the Quiditch Cup, which wasn't an official title name, was ok, but wasn't based on the movie, making it less interesting.

And now the 4th Harry Potter video game based on the third movie remains to be the same and no interesting materials have been made, and graphics are clean as usual but gameplay is very slow, complicated and unlike the others seems to be cheesy. EA didn't do well for the Harry Potter series like they did for the gigantic Lord of the Rings series which improved over the last 3 years based on graphics, real life scores from the movie, same interesting story mode and voices from the cast of the award winning movie.

All in all, this video game remains to be the same old same old, boring and not satisfying, don't be fooled by the great title, or the great front cover, if you go through all Harry Potter games released for the PS2, you'll see that this game has no new features.

I ordered the game from EBgames.com with Overnight shipping and it arrived Wednesday morning. Seeing as the last two PC versions of the game had taken several days to complete and had been quite challenging, this one was expected to be the same. I could not have been more incorrect.

    disappointing

I thought this game was like the other two. Fun and a little bit challenging. but i was wrong. Despite the great reviews, this game is nothing but a disapointment. No new features,no new locations, and for those of you who know all the characters, no trelawny ,no hogsmeade, No Boggarts. And you dojn't even get to fly buckbeak. it is just a cut-scene. The only new thing about the game is three new spells. Even thought you get to play as new characters, you can't choose which character to play as. This game is most probably aimed at children that do not understand what a good game is. Do not waste your money on this.

    Outstanding

This game is an Amazing addition to the already superb Harry Potter series. It's graphics are amazing and makes the Chamber of Secrets look as though its graphics aren't good at all. The ability to play Ron and Hermione is also very well done as I know I've always wanted to play Ron because he brings comic relief to the story of Harry Potter, and as this one is the darkest yet it's good to be able to play Ron. The new characteristics between the players are amazing with Harry being the more athletic, Ron is able to stay out of trouble, and Hermione with her logic and spells. This game is ab big jump from the Chamber of Secrets and I think it deserves a 5 out of 5.

The game has very cool effects. The game makers made a really good effort into making this game. I played it non-stop. It's somewhat like the book.

Thrilled PS2 Azkaban is different than PC Version
Reviewer: Laura Haven   Rancho Cordova, CA United States     06-04-2004
I just got the HP Prisoner of Azkaban yesterday for PS2 and am thrilled that [once again] EA Games has made it totally different from the PC version (which I enjoyed also, especially that it was a bit easier for my 4 year old to be able to play and enjoy). I love that with each version of these games, you get different play and spells and adventures in the PC vs PS2 Version. There are 3 versions (each very different) for the Sorcerer's Stone (PC, Playstation, and Playstation 2 are all different spells and adventures).

The Azkaban PC version is a bit easier, but still a fun play (regretfully missing a few things from the book Trelawney, Hogsmeade, a fully functional mauraders map, and Quidditch (which didn't break my heart since they have Buckbeek the Hippogriff to fly). I'm happy with it for me and my 4 year old's purposes and there are so many little nooks and cranny's to find things in, you can play over and over.

I'm not finished with this PS2 version yet, but I wanted to let you all know that so far it is moving right along, with some of the most spectacular graphics - You play as either Ron, Hermione, and Harry (these kids are really cute and have the best facial expressions). Switching between the characters is seemless, swift and easy on the eyes. You have to keep track of what each character's special talents are so that you can achieve your goals in the game, utilizing the right character's abilities. Sometimes the 3 kids will get separated and you have to play as just one, but that's very entertaining too. If you get to wandering around too much (exploring) and get sidetracked from your current "mission", one of the kids will remind you what you need to do to get back on track.

I Highly recommend this game, my little boy didn't want to go to bed last night and we were fighting over the controls - these games have taught him so much about figuring things out, he uses great vocabulary beyond his years, and the all important hand-eye coordination. He loves Harry Potter and has played all the PC games, PS2 Games, listened to the books on tape as well as me reading them to him. What a great Franchise with Loads of entertainment. Just awesome and just in time for the Azkaban Movie which starts TODAY.

PS: The Gameboy Advance Harry Potter games are different also, so more adventure in those as well.
